RV Thanksgiving: Celebrate a BIG Holiday in a Small Space
Whether you’re a on a year-round RV vacation, or a family with kids on a school break, Thanksgiving is a perfect time to relax in your motorhome. And just because you have an undersized kitchen doesn’t mean you should be missing out on the best meal of the year.
Hosting a Thanksgiving feast in your motorhome or travel trailer may be a little challenging, but all you need is some strategic planning. Since you have to utilize limited counter space, don’t leave everything for Thursday. Cold side dishes and pies can be made a day or two ahead of time. Crock-Pots come in handy when you need more oven space: try a slow cooker stuffing.
If you’re traveling from home, mix the ingredients of your side dishes before you leave so you don’t have to use up storage room with unnecessary items. Also remember your RV fridge is smaller than your fridge at home, so think of what you’ll do with leftovers after the big meal.
Think outside the box when RVing, or in this case, outside the kitchen! Consider cooking the turkey in an electric smoker outside, or BBQ individual turkey pieces. The BBQ is also great for grilling veggies and sweet potatoes.
Why not make it a community event with your campground neighbors? The kitchen size will multiply, the tasks will be smaller, and most importantly you’ll be creating great holiday memories around the un-traditional Thanksgiving patio table. If you RV in Arizona, it’s likely to be warm well into sunset so you can stay outside for quite a while.
Use these tips to reduce the stress of a small kitchen on a big day and focus on counting the blessings you are thankful for. From all of us at La Mesa RV, have a happy Thanksgiving!
