Good news, Phoenix friends! REI Phoenix has made their stamp on the West Valley. La Mesa RV was honored to attend their Goodyear Distribution Center launch party to get a first-hand look into their one-of-a-kind facility. With local vendors, non-profits and outdoor enthusiasts alike, it was a community event like no other. (Not to mention, there may have been tacos and local craft beer.)
Whether you are an REI member, seasoned adventurer or just a resident of the West Valley, be sure to check out this incredible, eco-friendly establishment. Fueled by the Arizona sunshine, the 2.2 megawatt solar system on the roof powers everything below, making it the only distribution center in the U.S. that generates all of its own power. In addition to energy consumption, water conservation was also at the top of their priority list. Since located in the desert, they have found a variety of ways to save water, one being a non-evaporative cooling system that keeps the building at a steady temperature from floor to ceiling.
Not only has REI shaped the way so many view the outdoors, but they are thoughtful of how to effectively operate their business long term, while making sure you get your gear in the most efficient and sustainable way.
Among the hosts of the event, were the Maricopa County Parks & Recreation Department. We got to meet the very talkative and outgoing rescue tortoise, “Soray”. Fun Fact: did you know most tortoises are rescued from construction sites? Be sure to check out their website on volunteer opportunities, specialty programs and you can even book your next campsite reservation at one of the many Maricopa County Regional Parks!
Let’s talk food. La Fiesta Restaurante served up some mean street tacos, garnished with fresh guacamole, cilantro, onion and your choice of salsa. On the road and still want to celebrate Taco Tuesday? You’re in luck. La Fiesta has taken over not only in Arizona, but the entire west coast! Make a quick stop at one of their many locations.
City of Gilbert’s first craft brewery, Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. served up their Baboquivari Belgian Blonde Ale complete with notes of AZ honey, as well as, their flagship Refuge IPA for those American hops lovers. Before October is over, make sure to stop in for their seasonal OktoberForest, whose name was inspired by The Nature Conservancy’s campaign to promote healthy forests and clean waterways.
